Celtic had looked on the verge of completing their fifth signing of the January transfer window by signing Australian international, Riley McGree. He had impressed tremendously at Birmingham City on loan and on top of that, he was also someone that Ange Postecoglou was very familiar with, having given him an international call up when he was a teenager.

It was believed that Celtic had managed to agree a deal with the player as well as his club, Charlotte FC.

But things have taken an unexpected twist since then. Middlesbrough are believed to have swooped in late with a bigger offer and appear to be leading the race for McGree’s signature now, while Celtic appear to be out of the race.

Thus, it will be interesting to see whether Celtic decide to turn their attention towards other players to strengthen their midfield. There are certainly quite a few solid alternatives to the Australian international.

Here are three players that Celtic can sign as an alternative, after they missed out on signing Australian international, Riley McGree:

Hannes Wolf

Wolf has struggled since moving to the Bundesliga. He was very highly-rated during his spell at RB Salzburg, showing tremendous potential but things have not gone as smoothly since his switch to Germany.

Wolf has failed to make his mark at Borussia Monchengladbach and it looks like he could be available on loan this January.

If it is a midfield position that Celtic are looking to fill, then Wolf might be the perfect signing for them. There is no doubt about his talent and potential. And Postecoglou has already shown during his time at Parkhead that he has the ability to get the best out of struggling players. Jota and Anthony Ralston are two brilliant examples of that.
