Major details emerge about surprise Celtic transfer twist
It had looked like Celtic had clinched their fifth signing of the January transfer window in the form of Riley McGree. The Australian international had impressed on loan in the Championship last season with Middlesbrough and as a result, there was a lot of interest in the Charlotte FC midfielder. It appeared that the Hoops had won the race for his signature though and the move was only a matter of time.
But things can change very quickly in football and that is exactly what has happened surrounding this McGree to Celtic transfer saga.
As reported by the Daily Mail, Middlesbrough have made a last minute attempt to sign McGree by offering a transfer fee worth £2 million more, including add-ons, and improved wages believed to be around £14,000 per week as well.
It has appeared to do the trick to be very honest as rumours have emerged that McGree talks with Celtic had stalled. It is unclear though whether it was because of this offer from Middlesbrough.
Celtic handed massive McGree worry by Middlesbrough
A day ago, it had looked like Celtic were bound to sign McGree this January. But now, things are no longer nearly as clear.
In fact, one might have to consider Middlesbrough as the favourites in the race for McGree’s signature after making a significantly improved offer for the Australian international star.
It must be pointed out that Celtic have already added to their midfield this January by bringing in Reo Hatate and Yosuke Ideguchi. As a result, some eyebrows were raised about the potential move for another midfielder in the form of McGree.
One cannot deny the fact though that McGree is a very exciting talent and would have brought something very different to Celtic. There is the Ange Postecoglou connection to consider as well. Nothing is set in stone yet in the transfer race though and let’s see how things unfold.
