Brendan Rodgers hands Celtic unexpected transfer boost

Brendan Rodgers might have enjoyed tremendous success as the manager of Celtic and he is the one who turned them into the Treble winning machine, who would go on to win every domestic trophy for four straight seasons, but the Northern Irishman is not remember as fondly by the club’s fans as he should have been due to the manner of his exit. He left the club in the middle of the season to join Leicester City.

Unexpectedly though, it looks like Celtic have been handed a transfer boost by Rodgers’ side this time around.

Filip Benkovic, who had been on loan at Celtic in the past, failed to break into Rodgers’ first-team plans. And it emerged today that the player and Leicester City have mutually agreed to cancel the remaining term of his contract.

Now, Celtic are not expected to make a move for the defender. But as reported by Sky Sport (via 67 Hail Hail), Udinese have moved for Benkovic.

Udinese had recently made a move for Celtic’s Stephen Welsh and are believed to have even put in a transfer bid for the young Scottish defender, as it looks like the Italian side are searching for a centre-back at the moment.

Thus, if Udinese end up signing Benkovic, it is unlikely that they would still try to sign Welsh, which is a positive for Ange Postecoglou’s side.

Welsh is an important part of this side although he might not be a regular starter for the Hoops yet. The Scottish youth international is still just 21 years of age and has plenty of time on his side to develop further.

Thus, the Hoops must definitely hold on to him unless an incredible offer is put on the table. And it looks like he will remain at Parkhead for the time being.
