Celtic’s start to the January transfer window must have left even the club’s most optimistic fans surprised. The club moved swiftly to announce the signings of Daizen Maeda, Reo Hatate and Yosuke Ideguchi, all three arriving from the J1 League. After that, they have brought in highly-rated 18-year-old striker, Johnny Kenny, from Sligo Rovers. And recent rumours have suggested that a move for Australian international, Riley McGree, might not be far away.

At the start of the window, the majority of Celtic fans would have been content with the club making four or five additions to Ange Postecoglou’s squad. But there have been suggestions that the Hoops have more plans.

One player that they had been heavily linked with in the summer is Lee Buchanan, who has impressed heavily in the Championship for Derby County.

And as reported by Derbyshire Live, there is renewed interest from Celtic in the Derby County star. Clubs like West Ham United, Watford, Nottingham Forest and several others are also believed to be eyeing a potential move. Wayne Rooney’s recent comments about transfers is interesting in this respect, as the manager said:

"“There has been bids for players, I know that. Them bids have been turned away because they are absolutely ridiculous bids.”"

Celtic appear to be still interested in Derby County youngster

Buchanan looks like a brilliant prospect and it is no surprise that so many clubs, including Celtic, are interested in the England youth international.

On top of that, left-back is an area that Celtic could do with more options in. Nobody has been able to nail down the spot in their first-team ever since the departure of Kieran Tierney in the summer of 2019, in a record move to join Arsenal.

Buchanan’s current deal with Derby County runs out at the end of the season but the club are believed have an option to extend it by another year. And while Rooney’s side sit at the bottom of the Championship table right now, they have been in decent form in this campaign and will be hoping to avoid relegation.
