It has been quiet of late on the goalkeeping situation at Celtic. It was an area of worry for the club in the summer but Joe Hart has come in and made the first-team gloves his own, putting in some impressive displays and proving to be a leader as well. There are now rumours though that a goalkeeper of interest may be on the radar of other clubs, including the Rangers.

Talk of a backup goalkeeper to Hart has lessened as the focus in the January transfer window has been on other players and positions till now. There has been speculation for a while about Vasilis Barkas moving out this month and questions over Scott Bain being good enough to be Celtic’s number 2.

Dundee United’s Benjamin Siegrist has been mentioned regularly in the past as a potential signing for Celtic though. And with only six months left on his current deal, the Swiss goalkeeper is believed to be on his way out of the club in the near future and has the ability to sign a pre-contract deal now.

Siegrist is believed to have attracted Celtic’s interest with some great performances for Dundee United against the Hoops. He appears to have caught the eye of other clubs as well though. As reported by the Daily Mail, the Rangers are planning a pre-contract move for the goalkeeper, who is also believed to be wanted by Southampton as well as clubs from Germany, France and Belgium.

Could Celtic sign another goalkeeper in the near future?

Dundee United also appear to be preparing for Siegrist’s exit, as they’ve signed Carljohan Eriksson. Amongst the clubs reportedly interested in the Swiss goalkeeper are Southampton.

Of course, that will always raise the question about Celtic making another potential move for Fraser Forster, whose current deal is believed to run out in the summer. But that would not be the right move at this point with the club already having a veteran goalkeeper in Hart.

For Celtic, the need for another goalkeeper will likely be dependent on what happens with Barkas. Of course, going after Siegrist on a pre-contract would be a solid move on their part as well.
