When Celtic signed Jota on a season-long loan, there were a lot of questions surrounding the Portuguese winger. While he had been an absolute standout while coming through the youth ranks and had even been linked with a move to Real Madrid at one point of time, his senior career had not unfolded as expected. He struggled to break into Benfica’s first-team and then had a disappointing loan spell at Real Valladolid as well.

Jota has looked like a completely different player at Celtic though. He has been nothing short of superb, showing his dazzling skills, as well as his ability to both score and assist.

According to stats from Transfermarkt, Jota has scored 8 goals and provided 7 assists in 18 appearances for the club till now.

Naturally, fans have called for the club to sign him on a permanent basis, with there believed to be an option to buy around £6 million in his current deal. And there appears to be some positive news in that regard. As reported by the Daily Record, talks have progressed well between Celtic and Benfica in recent days and Jota’s permanent switch to Parkhead could be close to reaching completion.

Celtic have already completed moves for Daizen Maeda, Reo Hatate, Yosuke Ideguchi and Johnny Kenny in recent weeks. And they are also believed to be closing in on a deal for Australian international, Riley McGree.

But, the biggest move that the club could pull off right now or in the near future is signing Jota from Benfica on a permanent basis.

Along with Kyogo, Jota has arguably been Celtic’s standout performer this season and signing him would be considered as a huge boost for the Hoops. Thus, this is brilliant news for the club and hopefully they are able to get a deal over the line as soon as possible.
