During the time of Ange Postecoglou as manager, Celtic have shown the ability to pull off a surprise move or two. One would remember that there were not a lot of rumours before the club completed a move for Kyogo Furuhashi in the summer. And it looks like they might possibly be set to repeat the trick this month, this time by signing an Australian international star.

The player in question is Riley McGree, who has recently impressed on loan at Birmingham City from Charlotte FC.

And while there have been calls for the Championship side to sign him permanently, it looks like it is Postecoglou’s side who are about to swoop in.

As reported by the Daily Mail, Celtic are closing in on a deal for McGree, who has become a firm fan favourite at Birmingham City during his loan spell. A number of Championship clubs are believed to have shown an interest but the Hoops are looking increasingly likely to convince him to sign for them over the coming days.

Statistically, McGree might not have been at his best during his time at Birmingham City, but overall, he was one of their best players during his loan spell at the Championship club.

It must also be pointed out that Birmingham City have not been at the top of their game in recent years. Last season, they finished the season at 18th and this time around they are currently sitting at the same position as well. Thus, it is not the easiest thing for a player to put up great numbers there at the moment.

McGree has shown enough to have caught the eye of several clubs though and one cannot forget about the Australian connection with Postecoglou. Signing another midfielder might raise a few eyebrows though.
