Ange Postecoglou’s approach is brilliant news for Celtic

Celtic in the past have suffered at times with a bloated squad and haven’t always taken a positive approach towards it. It is becoming evident though that Ange Postecoglou will be more decisive in the way he looks at such things. In previous seasons we saw project signings, developmental players and others, who stayed on at Parkhead despite not having any real chance of breaking through.

Loan deals seemed to be more about giving players the chance to get match experience and less a developmental springboard into the first-team.

There are, of course, exceptions. Callum McGregor and to some extent Ryan Christie are two who had positive loan spells and returned to play first-team roles.

But those are few and far between. So, the next couple of transfer windows could be quite telling in terms of Postecoglou’s approach to the squad. His signings so far look very positive, we’ll see soon if the exits turn out to be the same.

There are signs that Postecoglou will take a more decisive approach than some of his predecessors with regards to his squad.

Some may be surprised to see rumours of summer signings Liam Shaw and Osaze Urhoghide being allowed to leave on loan if the right offers come in. On the other hand, Ewan Henderson is expected to be allowed to leave on a permanent basis, after struggling to make his mark in the first-team.

The numerous injury problems and a general lack of depth has stretched the squad this season and meant that Postecoglou has needed to call on a lot of players who would not be expected to feature regularly in the future.

But as Celtic continue to add to their squad, that is not expected to remain the case for much longer. As a result, it might be time for quite a few to depart soon. Names like Albian Ajeti, Boli Bolingoli, Ismaila Soro and quite a few others come to mind.
