It’s early January, and that means transfer silly season is well and truly upon us. The latest in it is a rather odd suggestion regarding how Celtic can strengthen their squad and their title aspirations and comes from none other than former Hoops striker, Charlie Nicholas.

The pundit believes AS Monaco midfielder Cesc Fabregas would be a perfect fit for Ange Postecoglou’s side. The Spaniard, who has enjoyed an incredible career at both domestic and international level, is currently struggling for game time in this campaign amidst injury problems.

Despite Celtic’s undeniable quality in the middle of the park, there are few clubs that would turn down the chance of signing Fabregas if the opportunity presented itself. However, the midfielder’s astronomical salary would surely prove to be a stumbling block, when it comes to any potential move to Parkhead. The fact that he is 34 years of age is something to consider as well.

Nicholas’ reason for wanting Celtic to sign Fabregas is his view that the squad is currently unbalanced, and would benefit from a playmaker in the heart of midfield. As reported by Football Scotland, he wrote in his Express column:

"“I feel the team needs a Lubo Moravcik-type player and Cesc would be perfect.”"

He also added:

"“I would also like to see Celtic bring in another left-sided centre-half and a left-back. I still feel the team is unbalanced.”"

Celtic told Fabregas would be perfect for the club

While there is a debate to be had regarding Fabregas, one could argue Tom Rogic is currently filling that role with great success.

Nicholas also stressed Celtic’s requirement for a stronger presence down the left flank, and wants them to sign a left-sided centre-back and a left-back. The signing of Reo Hatate may go some way in filling those needs, with the Japanese utility man able to comfortably operate in defensive and midfield roles down the left side.

Celtic have already made an impressive start to their January transfer window, signing Hatate and his former J1 League colleagues, Daizen Maeda and Yosuke Ideguchi. However, a move for Fabregas seems very unlikely.
