Celtic were always expected to have an exciting January transfer window after it became clear in the first half of the season that they needed more squad depth if Ange Postecoglou’s side were to put up a sustainable title challenge. And it looks like that is exactly what they are aiming to bring next month. The Hoops have started agreeing moves even before January has started.

As reported by Sky Sports, Celtic have agreed a deal in principle to sign Daizen Maeda from Yokohama F. Marinos on an initial loan deal in January. They will also have the option of making the deal permanent in the summer.

It goes without saying that that is brilliant news for Celtic and Postecoglou. The club had been linked with Maeda for a long time and it looks like they might have pulled off a transfer masterstroke.

As reported by Yahoo Japan, the option to buy fee included in Maeda’s loan deal is an estimated €2 million.

It is safe to say that this is a brilliant move on the part of Celtic. This gives them the opportunity to see if Maeda can settle in the Scottish game or not, and move forward from there.

Yes, he was splendid in the J1 League in 2021, finishing as the top scorer alongside Leandro Damiao. He also has experience of playing in Postecoglou’s system from their time together at Yokohama F. Marinos. And on top of everything else, Maeda has played in Europe in the past as well, with Maritimo in Portugal.

Thus, all the signs point towards this being a great move for Celtic. But just in case it does not work out, both the club and the player will be able to part ways in the summer, which is a sensible option to have.
