Journalist has provided worrying Celtic transfer update

It is safe to say that Celtic need to bring in reinforcements all over the pitch if they are to challenge the Rangers in the Scottish Premiership title race this season. Lack of squad depth has been the Hoops’ Achilles’ heel this season and it has been further exposed with a number of players out injured. As a result, Ange Postecoglou has been left scrambling for options on more than one occasion already.

Celtic have already been linked with some interesting names in the form of Daizen Maeda, Reo Hatate and Yosuke Ideguchi. And while that might take care of their needs up front and in the middle of the park, the Hoops need to strengthen at the back as well.

Left-back has been an area of weakness for them for a long time now, since Kieran Tierney left and they have not had a regular there throughout the course of the first half of this season.

It does not look like they are looking to add someone there in January though. Kieran Devlin wrote in The Athletic:

"“I have not heard of any movement at left-back, at least in the short term.”"

Celtic do not appear to be looking for a new left-back in January

Left-back has been an area of worry for Postecoglou as well. Very often, Josip Juranovic has featured there despite not being a natural. Recently, Greg Taylor and Liam Scales have played on the left side of Celtic’s defence as well. Adam Montgomery and Boli Bolingoli are also possible options.

It must be said though that the situation is not ideal and Celtic do need someone who can nail down the spot.

No one has been able to do that for the past two-and-a-half seasons. And while Hatate is capable of playing at left-back and has done so for Kawasaki Frontale recently, it is safe to say that he is at his best when he plays in the middle of the park.
