It is safe to say that Celtic need to add more options going forward, especially with the likes of James Forrest, Albian Ajeti, Giorgos Giakoumakis and Mikey Johnston struggling with both injuries and form in recent times. Ange Postecoglou’s side have already been linked with a potential move for Daizen Maeda in the upcoming January transfer window and they might have an eye on an AZ Alkmaar star further down the line.

The man in question is Iceland international, Albert Gudmundsson. He has proven to be a solid player since arriving at AZ Alkmaar.

According to stats from Transfermarkt, he has scored 6 goals and provided 2 assists in 25 appearances for AZ Alkmaar this season.

There have been some suggestions though that he could be on his way out of the Dutch club in the near future. Gudmundsson’s current deal with AZ Alkmaar runs out next summer. And as reported by FCUpdate, negotiations over a new contract have been stopped by the player himself and he recently told Noordhollands Dagblad:

"“It’s been quiet for a while. Will we continue talking after the winter break? Maybe. I don’t know at the moment. At least I haven’t locked the door yet.”"

Celtic have been handed transfer boost in race for Gudmundsson

It is safe to say that this is a boost for Celtic’s chances when it comes to signing the AZ Alkmaar star in the future.

He could prove to be a solid addition to Postecoglou’s side and the biggest strength of the Iceland international is probably his incredible versatility, as he can play on the flanks, in the number ten role and up front as a striker.

Celtic can certainly do with a player with that kind of versatility, especially when he could potentially be available on a free transfer next summer. It has to be pointed out though that the Rangers are also believed to be interested in making a move for Gudmundsson. Now, it remains to be seen how things turn out.
