Celtic were handed a huge blow today as they dropped a couple of points against St Mirren to go six points behind the Rangers in the Premiership table. This was a game that the Hoops were expected to win even if it was away from home, considering the number of players that the hosts were missing. As a result, it was arguably the worst performance of the Ange Postecoglou era.
There is no time to reflect though as they have a Boxing Day match coming up against St Johnstone. But there will be time to rest after that.
As reported by Sky Sports, the SPFL board have made a majority decision and the three-week Scottish winter break will start after the Boxing Day games.
Thus, several big games, including the Glasgow Derby between Celtic and the Rangers have had to be postponed. The Hoops have learned the rescheduled date already though.
Celtic learn Glasgow Derby date after winter break is brought forward
Two games have had to be rescheduled for Celtic as a result of the early winter break. The first one is against Hibernian, which will now be played on January 17.
The second one is against the Rangers at Parkhead, which has now been rescheduled for February 2.
It is safe to say that the situation is far from ideal for all clubs involved. But the safety of the public is first and foremost. Thus, the decision to bring forward the winter break is the one which made the most sense under the current circumstances, after it was announced that stadium capacities will be reduced to 500 from Boxing Day, for a three week period.
The other two options were to go forward as planned or stop games immediately. Now, one can only hope that the situation improves over the coming weeks.
