Kyogo Furuhashi proved to be the star of the show in Celtic’s League Cup final win over Hibernian, to lift the first piece of silverware of the season. The Japanese superstar rose to the occasion and scored two wonderful goals to guide the Hoops to a 2-1 victory. It also ended the club’s short trophy drought, having not won one last season. And Ange Postecoglou will surely be hoping for more over the coming months.

It is safe to say that Kyogo has been an absolute standout for Celtic this season. The club signed him from Vissel Kobe in the summer and it is proving to be an inspired decision.

According to stats from Transfermarkt, Kyogo scored 16 goals and provided 5 assists in 25 appearances for the club. And he scored the two most important of those goals against Hibernian last night.

Coming into the game, there were serious worries about his fitness status though and whether he would be able to play the big game. But it appears that Kyogo was determined to play even though he has admitted to not being 100 per cent. As reported by Celtic’s official website, he said:

"“I wasn’t 100 per cent going into the match after the injury but I just had to play. I had to! I could not miss it. I knew what an important match it was for us all and I wanted to be part of it and give as much as I could.“The atmosphere was so good and it was a joy to play out there in such a big match in front of a full crowd, it really was something special and one of the great moments of my career so far – but I hope, of course, there are some more days like this.”"

Kyogo was not 100 per cent for Celtic’s League Cup final win vs Hibernian

Kyogo was not the most involved in the first half of the game but he came into his own when Hibernian took an unexpected lead.

Celtic would equalise in the very next minute of the game through a wonderful finish from the Japanese superstar and then, he pulled out something even more incredible out of his magic hat, as he lobbed the Hibernian goalkeeper for the winner.

Like so many great players, he took his opportunities when they were presented to him and as a result, went into the history books with an iconic Hampden Park performance for Celtic. One can only hope that there are many more to come.
