Kyogo Furuhashi injury history and updates

As we wait for news on whether Kyogo Furuhashi will be fit and available to start or be on the bench for Celtic against Hibernian in the Scottish League Cup Final on Sunday, it’s worth a look at the Japanese superstar’s injury history.

Remarkably for a player as dynamic and involved as Kyogo, it’s a relatively short injury history. He’s done well to avoid getting hurt in his high pressing style over the years. In fact it’s with Celtic that he has suffered the most serious ones so far.

In the current 2021/22 season he has had a spell of 21 days out in September missing 5 games and the length of time he will be out for his current injury remains to be seen.

His injury status for the final against Hibernian still remains a mystery after he picked up a hamstring problem against Real Betis earlier in December.

Kyogo has gotten injured twice during his time at Celtic already, although one of them did come when he was with the Japanese national team.

There has been little spoken in detail about Kyogo’s injury which saw him limp off in the victory over Real Betis in their final Europa League group game of the campaign on 9 December. Postecoglou rested many players for that match and would ideally have preferred to have left the Japanese star on the bench. He was called into action though when Albian Ajeti pulled up in the first half with a hamstring injury himself.

So it was worrying to see Kyogo’s game come to an end in what seemed similar fashion as he went down clutching his thigh before being substituted in the 71st minute.

Since then the only real update being shared is that the injury isn’t as bad as first feared and he could yet be back quite quickly.

So far, despite not having a striker fit and available, the Hoops have fared well without Kyogo till now with wins over Ross County and Motherwell.

Furuhashi suffered a knee injury while playing for Japan against China in a World Cup qualifier early in September. He was out for 21 days, returning on 30 September against Bayer Leverkusen at Parkhead in a 0-4 defeat for Celtic

He missed 5 games for the Hoops overall. In the league there was a 3-0 win over Ross County, a 1-0 defeat away to Livingston and a 1-1 draw with Dundee United. He missed the exciting 4-3 away defeat against Real Betis and a 3-0 League Cup victory over Raith Rovers. He may well have made a difference had he been available during that disappointing run of results.

You have to go back to May 2019 when Furuhashi was playing for Vissel Kobe in Japan’s J1 League for a previous injury. He was taken off injured during Vissel Kobe’s 0-1 defeat by Kashima Antlers.

Of his four games missed, there were two wins and a draw in the league and a 1-3 loss in the J League Cup. Once again you have to wonder if his absence made a difference in those games.
