Coming into the season, Celtic must have been aware that squad depth was their Achilles’ Heel. And that is certainly being tested right now with players like Kyogo Furuhashi, Jota, James Forrest and several others out on the sidelines. Thus, it is safe to say that Ange Postecoglou will need quite a few of his players to step up and make an impact over the coming weeks and possibly months.
While they have been playing without several of their top stars, Celtic have done quite well, all thing considered in recent weeks.
They have won all four of their games in December till now and have shown the ability to grind out results, which must have pleased Postecoglou. Every top team needs to have that ability.
But it is safe to say that tougher and more important tests lie ahead. The Scottish League Cup final is less than a week away and the chance to become a Celtic hero is up for grabs. Will someone reach out and take it?
Celtic: 3 players who need to step up for Postecoglou’s side
Here are three Celtic players who need to step up for Ange Postecoglou’s side, with several players missing through injury:
Mikey Johnston
Mikey Johnston has been considered as one of the biggest talents at Celtic for quite some time now. But it is safe to say that one injury after the other have halted his progress as the winger has the spent majority of his senior career out on the sidelines.
He has been back for a while now though and Postecoglou might need him to step his game up with the likes of Kyogo, Jota and Forrest all out of action.
One of Johnston’s biggest strengths was that he was always effective, both scoring and assisting. He has not been able to do that this season till now. According to stats from Transfermarkt, he has not scored and has one assist to his name in 2021/22. Hopefully he can rediscover his best soon.
