At Celtic, we have seen the issues that can occur when contracts run into their final year and potential transfer fees go down significantly. Ryan Christie, Kristoffer Ajer and Odsonne Edouard come to mind in this regard, who left for transfer fees significantly lower than what they were rated at just a year ago. It can also affect players’ performances, who might worry about getting injured.

It’s also difficult structuring the squad when several players’ contracts are expiring at the same time.

This is an area Celtic seem to be getting spot on at the moment. With the exception of the loans for Jota and Cameron Carter-Vickers, which are short-term deals by virtue of being loans, there are only two players in the current first team squad with contracts expiring next summer according to Transfermarkt.

Karamoko Dembele and Ewan Henderson are those two players and while both very talented, neither has really been involved much this season. Thus, overall, it is a wonderful position to be in for Celtic.

Are more contract extensions coming for Celtic?

It’s a different story for Jota and Carter-Vickers, but what’s the likelihood of Dembele and Henderson extending their contracts?

Dembele was the subject of much speculation last season as it looked like he might have been on his way out of the club. Of course, things changed dramatically when Ange Postecoglou arrived in the summer and we saw him feature in pre-season friendlies.

He suffered a serious injury in pre-season though and has been out of action since. We don’t know yet when he will be available again, and it remains to be seen if he gets more first-team chances in the future. That could prove to be the determining factor in whether he stays or leaves.

Henderson’s situation may be even more interesting. We have seen very little of him. That is until he came on late in midweek’s Europa League group stage game against Real Betis and scored with his first touch. It remains to be seen if he gets more chances on the back of that.
