Celtic are expected to make some additions in the January transfer window in order to strengthen their squad. Despite the Hoops’ good form in recent times, it is clear that they do not have a deep squad at the moment and could certainly do with a few more options in several positions. One of those positions could easily be centre-back.

Cameron Carter-Vickers is currently only on a season-loan loan spell from Tottenham Hotspur, although Celtic do have an option to buy included in the deal. Cart Starfelt has looked solid but recently picked up an injury that has kept him out for weeks. And Christopher Jullien has been out of action for almost a year, and who knows how he will look when he returns.

As a result, a recent injury worry around Stephen Welsh, after he limped off in a Scotland under-21s game, must have sent alarm bells ringing. Fortunately, it does not look like it was a serious problem, but if either of the two centre-backs pick up an injury in the near future, Postecoglou could be left scrambling for options.

As a result, a move for another centre-back could potentially make sense for Celtic. And one player that they have been linked with recently is John Souttar.

Souttar has put in brilliant performances in recent times for both the Hearts and the Scotland national team. His current deal is also set to run out in the summer and Robbie Neilson has admitted that he could leave the club in January if the right offer came in. As reported by the Daily Record, the manager said:

"“It depends what the fee is to be honest with you.“At this moment in time, he’s a Hearts player and we’re still trying to get him to continue to be a Hearts player.“We’ll see where it goes.”"

He also said:

"“The better the team does, and the higher up the league they are, it’s harder to keep all the players.“It’s just part of football and something you have to accept.”"

Souttar has impressed recently and has been linked with a potential move to both Glasgow giants. But there appears to be interest in his signature from down South as well, with the likes of Middlesbrough, Blackburn Rovers, Nottingham Forest, Stoke City and others rumoured to be interested.

It remains to be seen what the future holds for Souttar. But he could certainly prove to be a solid addition to this Celtic squad if he can keep performing like he has in recent times.
