Ange Postecoglou has done a brilliant job with the cards that he has been dealt at Celtic. At the moment, they are in the middle of a great run of results and look like the in-form team in Scottish football. But even then, a lot of changes are required at Parkhead. The squad depth is pretty thin and the manager could do with more options in several areas all over the pitch. One of those is midfield.

The likes of Ryan Christie and Olivier Ntcham were never properly replaced by Celtic in the summer. And just when it had looked like the combination of Tom Rogic, Callum McGregor and David Turnbull had found their rhythm, the Australian picked up an injury which has kept him out action for the past few weeks.

In defensive midfield, they have quite a few options. But neither Ismaila Soro nor James McCarthy has impressed this season. And while Nir Bitton has done a decent job over the past few games, he does not look like a long-term solution for Postecoglou.

It does look like the club have plans to strengthen their midfield soon. As reported by the Scottish Daily Mail [print edition 19/11/21, p.86] (via 67 Hail Hail), two new midfielders are being targeted by Celtic for the January transfer window.

Celtic are looking to strengthen their midfield in January

Celtic could do with more options in both attacking midfield and defensive midfield in January. Now, it remains to be seen if the club end up strengthening in both positions.

The club have been linked with a few interesting names in recent days like Reo Hatate, Aaron Mooy and Danny Mandroiu.

This is promising news to say the least. It looks like the club are ready to back Postecoglou in January after he has arguably exceeded expectations till now. And if Celtic are to challenge for the Premiership title this season down the stretch, they will definitely need a deeper squad.
