Transfer windows are never easy at Celtic. Several rumours swirl around Parkhead every time although very often, most of those come to nothing. That is not unusual for the Hoops. The upcoming January transfer window could be even tougher than usual though, as Ange Postecoglou’s side need to strengthen, in order to challenge for the Scottish Premiership title.

There are a lot of hopes that the Hoops could use the upcoming transfer window to strengthen their squad further. Rumours have suggested that the club certainly have plans for January.

Just to understand the magnitude of the squad rebuild required at Parkhead, in the summer, they signed twelve players in total, ten on a permanent basis and two on loan with an option to buy included in both those deals. That’s quite some turn around and yet, still not enough. We’ve seen gaps in defence, a lack of strikers at times due to injury or fitness issues and a midfield problem whenever Callum McGregor is absent.

Even with players coming in, there are still issues to resolve. We are in November and we’ve still to see much of some of the summer signings. Liam Scales, for example, has had very little game time and Giorgos Giakoumakis still appears to be getting up to match speed.

Peter Lawwell may have faced plenty of criticism over the years but there is no denying that he was a highly experienced negotiator. Now, with Dom McKay’s exit just months into his role, no Director of Football and a scouting network still reshaping, one has to wonder how incomings and outgoings will be handled.

You would expect Postecoglou to have a lot of involvement and would want him to have a big say when it comes to transfers. It’s important that the manager has a say, but ultimately, it will be up to the club to get deals over the line.

Getting the right structure and organisation to make deals happen is critical. Do Celtic have that in place at the moment? We will get that answer in January.
