Celtic find themselves in a solid position right now and are expected to challenge the Rangers for the Scottish Premiership title. But then, one of their major worries right now will be their squad depth. Ange Postecoglou’s side could find themselves in serious trouble if some of their regular players ended up getting injured at the same time. We already saw them struggle earlier in the campaign when Kyogo and Callum McGregor spent time on the sidelines.
Thus, it is clear that Celtic need to add to their squad in the upcoming January transfer window. And one area that they might have to look towards is goalkeeper.
Joe Hart has done a brilliant job since coming in. But if he was to miss action at some point in this season, there does not appear to be an in-form goalkeeper who could replace him. On top of it all, Vasilis Barkas has been linked with a Parkhead exit as well.
David Marshall is someone who has been rumoured with a Celtic return in recent times, as recently as last summer. And the current Derby County goalkeeper has admitted that he wants to leave the club in January. As reported by 67 Hail Hail, he said on The Go Radio Football Show:
"“I’m desperate to get out in January, obviously, difficult with Derby’s situation with the club going into administration. So it’s a difficult time and sometimes these things are taken out of your hands as a footballer.”"
Should Celtic consider a move for Marshall?
Marshall departed Celtic over a decade ago but has gone on to enjoy a solid career at multiple clubs down South, mostly in the Championship.
This season though, he has found opportunities hard to come by and naturally, it looks like the goalkeeper is looking for an exit in the near future.
At 36 years of age, he would not be a long-term solution for any club at this stage of his career but he could prove to be a solid back up goalkeeper. And if Barkas was to depart Parkhead in January, a move for the Scottish goalkeeper is something that the Hoops should potentially give a thought to.
