Celtic must have known that they were taking a bit of a risk when they signed James McCarthy this summer as a free agent. And till now, it has not quite worked out.

On top of his game, McCarthy was a consistent performer in the Premier League and has played for the likes of Everton, Crystal Palace and Wigan Athletic over the years.

But he has had his fair share of injury issues in recent years, which is the reason it was quite a surprise when Celtic handed him a four-year contract this summer.

Till now, McCarthy has not found his feet at Parkhead, and has struggled to get up to match fitness. He has played a few times but has not been able to get a long run in the team and settle down.

But if he can remain fit, he might have a bigger role after the international break, as Ange Postecoglou does not have a lot of options in the middle of the park at the moment.

Boli Bolingoli

Boli Bolingoli arrived at Celtic the summer that Kieran Tierney left for Arsenal. It is safe to say that the Belgian has not been able to fill those boots till now.

Bolingoli’s time at Celtic has not been like he would have expected when he arrived at the club a couple of years back. He has never quite gotten a long run in the first-team.

This season also, he has not featured much despite making a positive impression when he has played. But with both Anthony Ralston and Josip Juranovic playing a lot of football recently, Postecoglou will have to give both of them some rest from time to time. And that could prove to be Bolingoli’s chance to get some first-team minutes and make an impression. At the moment, he does look more ready than Adam Montgomery and Liam Scales, while Greg Taylor remains out with an injury.
