Steven Gerrard’s past comments about Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic exit in the middle of the season have emerged, after he himself departed the Rangers to become the Aston Villa manager with just 13 Premiership games played in this season till now. And it is safe to say that they are very interesting considering recent events.

Rodgers’ decision to leave Celtic in the middle of the season in order to join Leicester City was a controversial one to say the least and continues to be a topic of discussion to this day. It is a massive reason why the manager is not remembered very fondly by fans despite his significant achievements at Parkhead.

Gerrard was the manager of the Rangers back when it happened. And naturally, he was asked to comment on the matter.

As reported by the Daily Record, Gerrard had said about Rodgers’ Celtic exit back then:

"“I don’t look at the Premier League, I don’t wish I was in the Premier League, I am very happy here.“Rangers is massive, Rangers is huge and that’s the reason why I decided to take this opportunity up. I really appreciate where I sit right now and the job I have here. This is a huge job.“It seems (the lure of the Premier League has been a big factor) otherwise he would have declined the opportunity to talk to Leicester.“But it’s certainly not the case with myself. I am very happy and settled here and delighted I am the Rangers manager.”"

Gerrard’s comments about Rodgers’ Celtic exit have emerged again

A few years on and Gerrard himself has departed the Rangers in the middle of the season, to join Aston Villa. And he has departed much earlier on in the campaign than Rodgers had back in 2019.

It is safe to say that this makes things very interesting in the Scottish Premiership title race. Celtic were already looking like the team in form, having won seven and drawn one of their previous eight games across all competitions. And Ange Postecoglou’s side appear to be getting better as the season progresses.

The Rangers still have a four point lead at the top of the table but there are still 25 Premiership games to be played and the Ibrox side will have to make huge changes. It remains to be seen how the team will react to Gerrard’s sudden exit but it is safe to say that this could be a brilliant opportunity for Celtic to cut down the gap between the two sides and may be even take a lead of their own.
