Celtic are expected to bring in new signings in the upcoming January transfer window. And one player that they have been heavily linked with for quite some time is Daizen Maeda, the Yokohama F. Marinos superstar who has already played under Ange Postecoglou. And there appears to be some very positive news regarding the potential move.

It is not difficult to see why Celtic might want to sign Maeda. The Japanese star has been absolutely sensational this season and is leading the J1 League scoring charts despite not being an out-and-out striker.

Maeda showed what he was capable of earlier, scoring a hattrick in Yokohama F. Marinos’ 8-0 win against FC Tokyo. That will extend his lead at the top of the goalscoring table. According to stats from Transfermarkt, he has scored 21 goals in 33 J1 League appearances this season.

While speaking about Albian Ajeti on the Record Celtic Podcast and as reported by the Daily Record, Scott Burns called Maeda’s move to Parkhead ‘likely’:

"“Maeda is another player Ange Postecoglou knows well and if he comes in, which is likely, or another striker then January will be a time for Albian Ajeti to go out the door.”"

Maeda could prove to be an incredible signing for Celtic

A move for Maeda is not over the line yet but the rumours regarding it have sounded very positive when it comes to Celtic’s chances of getting it done in January.

Celtic were always expected to make moves for J1 League players in January. By that point of time, their league campaign will have been finished and it will be much easier to make signings than it was in the summer.

Kyogo’s success since joining Celtic will only increase the excitement regarding a potential move for Maeda.

He could be the perfect signing for Postecoglou’s style of football and add some much needed versatility and fluidity up top.

At 24 years of age, he is only expected to get better moving forward and on top of everything, he already has experience of having played in Europe.
