It is safe to say that Celtic do not have the deepest squad right now and we have already seen Ange Postecoglou’s side struggle with injuries this season. As a result, they would be expected to make some additions in the January transfer window and one area that they need to strengthen in is midfield.

This is not a new worry for the Hoops though and was a problem during Neil Lennon’s second stint as manager as well. In fact, about a couple of years ago, they were heavily linked with a move to bring back Victor Wanyama to the club.

He was with Tottenham Hotspur at that point of time but was not playing a lot of football. And rumours floated around that the club could try to sign him on loan.

In fact, it appears that Celtic did make a loan approach for him although the circumstances were not right for the move to take place even though he even spoke to Lennon. As reported by Football Scotland, Wanyama said regarding the situation:

"“There was a loan approach but I don’t know what happened. I didn’t follow it up that much.“I spoke to Neil as well and he said to me ‘it’s difficult with the demands’ and at that time they didn’t have the money to make it happen.”"

Wanyama even spoke to Lennon about Celtic return

Despite their being interest in a move, it did not materialise. Ultimately, Wanyama would end up joining CF Montreal and has played regular football for the MLS side since then.

Rumours about a potential return to Celtic one day have never quite gone away though and at 30 years of age, time is still on Wanyama’s side for it to potentially happen.

Celtic definitely could do with an option like him in the middle of the park. The Kenyan was arguably one of the best midfielders to play for the club over the past decade or so and put in some huge performances in both Scotland and Europe. Who can forget his iconic goal against Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League?
