Callum McGregor has played in a deeper role in recent weeks with Tom Rogic and David Turnbull playing in front of him. And to be honest, the Hoops have thrived with that midfield three recently.

McGregor is the kind of midfielder who is capable of doing almost everything. And his deeper role takes away from his abilities further up the pitch.

Thus, it might be a good idea to move him a bit forward in Rogic’s absence and bring in a defensive midfielder to play in the deeper role.

That could result in getting the best out of McGregor’s qualities in the final third of the pitch while also giving another player some much needed time on the pitch to adjust to Ange Postecoglou’s style of football.

James McCarthy

It is safe to say that James McCarthy would not be a like-for-like replacement for Rogic. Instead, he would most probably have to come in and sit in a deeper role, which would allow McGregor to move further up.

Of course, there is no denying the fact that McCarthy has struggled to find his feet since arriving at Celtic over the summer. He has not able to quite reach match fitness and has picked up a couple of injuries as well.

But at the top of his game, he is a very good player and can contribute to Postecoglou’s side. Now, it remains to be seen if he can find his best form anytime soon.

If he can then he might just be the perfect player to come in and play in the central midfield role. We have seen Nir Bitton being given a run there already against Livingston but that combination just did not appear to click. One massive boost for Postecoglou is the fact that McCarthy is fit once again.
