For months, Daizen Maeda is a name that has done the circles amongst fans as a J1 League player that Celtic should make a move for in January. It is not hard to see why considering the form that he has shown and the fact that Ange Postecoglou would know him very well from their time together at Yokohama F. Marinos. And now, it looks like the Hoops might actually be looking to make the move.

As reported by The Times, Celtic are confident of signing Maeda in the January transfer window and well-placed sources in Japan expect a deal to be done as well.

Of course, nothing is over the line yet and until that is the case, there will be doubts about whether the move will actually end up happening. Also, how will Maeda do at Celtic? His first stint in Europe, on loan with Maritimo, was not spectacular.

But as reported by Celts Are Here, journalist Dan Orlowitz said:

"“Obviously his first stint in Europe didn’t quite work out [On loan to Maritimo] but he’s another “not if but when” player. Not at all surprised Ange would go for him, he’ll do great.”"

He also said:

"“If you asked all of us who follow the J.League who Ange’s shopping list would include – and a lot of people did – Maeda would have been in everyone’s top 3 along with Furuhashi.”"

Asked if Kyogo and Maeda could play in the same team, he responded:

"“Oh absolutely, Ange will get them in sync.”"

Maeda can be a very exciting signing for Celtic

Of course, it remains to be seen if the move ultimately ends up happening but it is safe to say that if it does, Maeda would be a very exciting signing for Celtic.

Possessing incredible pace, good movement and the ability to finish with both his feet, it is not hard to see why Postecoglou might want to reunite with the Yokohama F. Marinos star.

At this point of time, he is leading the J1 League scoring charts and is capable of playing as a left winger, a second striker or even a centre forward if the situation calls for it.

Postecoglou was always expected to turn towards Japan in January with the J1 League season coming to an end at that point of time. And it looks like Maeda is one of the players in his sights.
