International breaks are always a bit of a worry for clubs. It was just at the start of September that we saw Kyogo suffer an injury while with the Japan national side and it is safe to say that his absence had a huge impact on Celtic and their performances.

Thus, sometimes the news that a player has not been selected to start an international game can feel like a relief. But if a player is not even included in the playing squad, it raises the question about why they were called up in the first place.

Overall, the October international break was a good one for Celtic as players did not pick up injuries while with their national sides. The performances of the club’s stars were also very positive as well for the most part.

The Republic of Ireland national team’s selection of Liam Scales did seem to be an odd one though. He was called up as a late replacement but did not even make the matchday squad for either of the two games, against Azerbaijan and Qatar respectively.

The Celtic player did not even make the Republic of Ireland matchday squad

The Republic of Ireland team did pretty well in both matches, beating Azerbaijan 3-0 and then Qatar 4-0. Both were reasonably comfortable wins despite the long travel time involved. Scales failed to even make the 12-man bench both times though.

As reported by Extra.ie, Celtic have been unimpressed by the treatment of the defender.

And one does have to question why he was called up in the first place if he was not even going to make the matchday squad on either occasion, despite the game against Qatar being a friendly.

It must be said though that Scales is facing a lack of game time at Celtic as well. He has featured only once since arriving at Parkhead, and although he was impressive on that occasion, we are yet to see him since.
