Manager claims Premiership star better than every Celtic goalkeeper
By Nathan Dunn
The goalkeeper situation was a major issue last season at Celtic. With the arrival of Joe Hart though, it appears that the Hoops have found some stability between the sticks even though he might not be the long-term solution at Parkhead.
Yet, former St Johnstone manager, Steve Lomas, believes that there are better goalkeepers in the Premiership itself.
Lomas became the St Johnstone manager in 2011 and remained at the club till the end of the 2012/13 season. It must be said that his time with the club was quite a success and he would go on to manage Millwall after that. He did not spend even a single season with the English club though and that was his last job in management.
Lomas believes that current St Johnstone goalkeeper, Zander Clark, is better than any goalkeeper at Celtic right now. As reported by Football Scotland, he said:
"“You look at Celtic at the minute.“It’s been good for St Johnstone that they’ve been able to keep Zander but if he keeps performing as he has been I think it’s only a matter of time.“There’s no doubt Zander is better than what’s at Celtic, in my opinion, from what I’ve saw, keeping an eye on it.“I’ve kept an eye on his career and what he’s been doing and I think if he keeps going and doing what he’s done for the past 16-18 months, he’s been right up there as one of the best goalkeepers in the Premiership.”"
Is Clark better than every Celtic goalkeeper?
Hart came to Celtic hoping to rediscover his form and he has had a decent individual time at Parkhead till now. He has pulled off some big saves and brought stability and leadership to this team.
Last season, we saw how all three goalkeepers at Celtic – Vasilis Barkas, Scott Bain and Conor Hazard – had gotten decent runs in the first-team. Now, it appears that Hart has nailed down his spot in the starting XI for the time being.
But, there is no denying that Clark has been brilliant for St Johnstone. He was a major part of their domestic Cup double last season and has been one of the best goalkeepers in the Premiership for a while now.
At 29 years of age, he is also entering his prime as a goalkeeper and could get even better moving forward. While it is hard to say who is the better of the two, Celtic could certainly do with a goalkeeper like Clark when it comes to the long-term picture.
