Over the course of this season, it has become clear that Celtic need to bring in quite a few more players before they can compete for the Scottish Premiership title once again. This team has already shown glimpses of how good they can be under the management of Ange Postecoglou, when at the top of their game, but the current squad just is not deep enough for that to be sustainable.
We have already seen the Hoops struggle due to injuries this season and they must be prepared for the future. One great opportunity to bring in some reinforcements will be in January.
Over the course of the summer, Celtic signed just one player from the J1 League, which was a bit of a surprise considering Postecoglou’s experience of managing in Japan. But that player was Kyogo, and it very possibly might turn out to be one of the club’s best signings over the last several years.
In January though, they could try to bring in some more players from Japan, with the J1 League season completed by that point of time. And one player they must have an eye on is Yokohama F. Marinos superstar, Daizen Maeda.
Celtic must make move for Maeda
Maeda is enjoying a tremendous campaign right now. According to stats from Transfermarkt, he has scored 17 goals and provided 3 assists in 29 appearances in the J1 League so far this season.
At this point of time, he is the top scorer in the J1 League this season. And what is more important is the fact that he has already played under the management of Ange Postecoglou during their time together at Yokohama F. Marinos.
Maeda is capable of playing as a centre forward, a second striker or as a left-winger. He possesses incredible pace, the ability to get past his man and the quality to finish with both his feet. And at 23 years of age, he would only be expected to get better moving forward.
He could prove to be an excellent addition to this Celtic team. The Hoops seem a bit light on options in attack at the moment. Giorgos Giakoumakis, James Forrest, Mikey Johnston and Karamoko Dembele have all had their fair share of injury worries recently.
Thus, bringing in someone like Maeda would add a lot of flexibility to Postecoglou’s side. It must also be pointed out that the Japanese star has already played in Europe in the past with Maritimo.
