Mohamed Elyounoussi was one of the few bright spots in Celtic’s disappointing 2020/21 campaign and it is safe to say that most fans probably would have wanted to see him remain at the club. That didn’t turn out to be the case though, as after a couple of seasons on loan at Parkhead, he is now back at Southampton.

He is having a decent time with the Premier League club at the moment. According to stats from Transfermarkt, Elyounoussi has scored 4 goals and provided 2 assists in 6 appearances across all competitions for Southampton this season.

That is a massive improvement on his first season with the club back in 2018/19, when he had failed to register a single goal or assist before being sent out on loan to Celtic the following season.

Elyounoussi has admitted that he learned a lot during his time at Parkhead. As reported by Nettavisen (via 67 Hail Hail), he said:

"“Self-confidence has a lot to say in football, but I also think I have developed physically. Not necessarily when it comes to running capacity, but going into duels and using the body more [after Celtic spells].“I came from the Swiss league, which was much more technical. I experienced a little more pressure in Scotland and played many matches as a striker – target striker even. I learned a lot there.”"

Elyounoussi could have been a great fit in Ange Postecoglou’s Celtic side

It is safe to say that Elyounoussi could have been a brilliant fit in this current Celtic side under the management of Postecoglou.

He already showed an impressive eye for goal during his couple of seasons on loan at the club, especially considering the fact that he was never quite a regular in the starting XI.

In Postecoglou’s style of football though, he could have done even very better and it would have been very interesting to see Elyounoussi in the current Celtic team. Unfortunately, it does not feel like that is likely to ever happen.

It is great to see him doing well at Southampton though and hopefully he will continue his good form for the Premier League side. On the other hand, Celtic have a very exciting player on their hands right now in the form of Jota and let’s see how the season turns out for him.
