It is clear that Celtic need to ring in the changes both on and off the pitch if they are to compete not just in Scotland but in Europe as well, after not having made the UEFA Champions group stages for four straight seasons.

Now, the fact of the matter is that the Hoops will have to find innovative ways to compete with clubs around Europe, who have a much bigger budget. Celtic could draw inspiration from a few clubs though.

The first of them is Brentford, who got promoted to the Premier League this season and are doing very well at the moment, sitting at seventh right now ahead of the likes of Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal and many more.

The second of them is Club Brugge, who recently drew 1-1 in the Champions League with a Paris Saint-Germain side consisting of the likes of Lionel Messi, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe. Then, they managed to beat RB Leipzig the following matchday. And it is not just a one-off for them. The Belgian side have done well in Europe’s top competition over the past several years now.

Another great example of a club delivering well above expectations right now is RB Salzburg although in their case, they are part of a network of clubs around the world, which makes scouting and bringing in players much more efficient.

Celtic need to draw inspiration from clubs like Brentford, Club Brugge and RB Salzburg

With much talk previously of a transformation in the structure at Celtic, it is safe to say that things have not quite picked up pace yet. Hopefully, they will in the future as that might be the best way to move forward in modern football.

Steven Pressley joined Brentford in the summer as Head of Individual Development. He is responsible for monitoring the individual development programme of Brentford’s high potential players.

That’s how much detail that clubs like Brentford are paying attention to at the moment. One has to wonder, who plays a similar role at Celtic?

It is clear that Celtic need to make several changes behind the scenes over time if they are to get back to competing in the UEFA Champions League one day. Clubs like Brentford, Club Brugge and RB Salzburg should provide them inspiration when it comes to the structure to follow.
