When Jota arrived at Celtic on transfer deadline day from Benfica on a season-long loan, not many fans were quite sure what to expect from the Portuguese youngster. He was one of the brightest young talents in world football while coming through the youth ranks and had been heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid not too long ago.

It is safe to say that things have not gone as expected for Jota since then though. He has not quite managed to establish himself in senior football.

His start to life at Celtic has been very bright though and he already appears to be a big part of Ange Postecoglou’s team. According to stats from Transfermarkt, he has scored 2 goals and provided 2 assists in 7 appearances for the club across all competitions.

Celtic have an option to buy included in the loan deal which is believed to be just above £6 million. But there is a big worry regarding any possible permanent transfer for Jota in the future.

Celtic’s biggest worry regarding possible Jota permanent transfer

Firstly, it must be said that a transfer fee over £6 million is pretty big for Celtic and would make Jota one of the most expensive signings in the history of the club. Thus, he would have to have a very impressive season if the Hoops are to make his loan stay permanent.

But even more importantly, it is whether Jota would want to remain at Parkhead beyond this season. A good campaign could raise the interest of clubs around Europe and if Celtic do indeed want to make a permanent move for him at that point, it would be interesting to see what the Portuguese youngster decides to do. A run in the Benfica first-team could be a possibility as well.

It must be said though that Celtic is the first club that Jota is playing regular senior football for and hopefully, he can continue to perform like this through the course of the season. After that, we will see what the future holds.
