One thing that has become clear over the last few weeks is the fact that Celtic need several more players if they are to challenge for titles this season. At the moment, the squad depth is not there for them to compete over the course of a long season, especially considering the high-intensity style of football that Ange Postecoglou wants the Hoops to play.
In that regard, the January transfer window was always going to be more important than most in recent times. What is most interesting is the fact that at that point of time, the J League season will have been completed and it will make it easier for Celtic to sign players from there.
Over the summer transfer window, the club just signed one player from the J League in the form of Kyogo. And it is safe to say that he has already made an impact at Parkhead and established himself as an important member of this team.
Postecoglou has shed some light on the club’s January transfer plans. As reported by The Herald, the Celtic manager said:
"“There’s no secret we still need to add to the squad.“We were never going to do it in one transfer window, particularly when you look at the significant exits we had over the past year. This was always going to be a two to three window process.“We are looking at January at the moment. We know the areas we need to bolster up. That doesn’t necessarily mean adding experience, it’s about getting more players that I believe can play the type of football we want to play.”"
Celtic need to add to their squad in January
Considering the fact that Celtic made twelve additions over the summer, one cannot expect them to make several more signings in January. But it will be important that they make at least two to three signings who can come in and have an immediate role to play in the first-team.
There are certain positions where the club do not possess a lot of depth at this point of time and it is in those positions that they must target players in.
Until then though, hopefully Celtic will be able to improve their performances and climb up the Scottish Premiership table. At the moment, they sit at sixth and a defeat against Aberdeen will see them slip down to seventh heading into the international break.
