Jeremie Frimpong was not at Celtic for a long time. But during that short span, he had managed to establish himself as a fan favourite and one would have expected him to get a great reception when he made his return to Parkhead with Bayer Leverkusen.

As a result, it was a bit of a surprise when some of the fans decided to boo Frimpong throughout the game. That did not stop him from putting in a solid performance on the night though as Bayer Leverkusen walked out of Parkhead with a 4-0 win.

When Frimpong arrived at Celtic, not many would have expected him to have become a first-team regular within a few months. But that is exactly what happened and he played a big part in the club’s Quadruple Treble campaign.

His stay at Parkhead was only a season-and-a-half long though as he would go on to join Bayer Leverkusen in the middle of the 2020/21 campaign and there he has established himself as a first-team regular as well. Some Celtic fans did not appear to be happy with his exit and booed him on his return to the club. But Frimpong showed his class by sending a brilliant message on social media after the game. He tweeted out:

Frimpong could have been a good fit in this Celtic side

After last night’s performance, it is hard not to feel that Celtic might not have the type of players that Ange Postecoglou needs to play his style of football. Somebody like Frimpong could have been a perfect fit in this system though, with his pace, dribbling ability and comfort on the ball.

While the performance was not bad and they held their own against one of Bundesliga’s best teams for most parts, there are still a lot of areas that this team needs to work on before they can start getting results in these types of games.

They were too open at the back and made defensive mistakes, as has often been the case in recent times. On the other end of the pitch, they could not take their chances although the Bayer Leverkusen goalkeeper deserves a lot of credit as well.
