The Celtic vs Bayer Leverkusen game did not go as most Hoops fans would have hoped or wanted. A 4-0 defeat at Parkhead means that it will be very difficult for this team to make a comeback and make it to the knockout phase of the competition, having lost both of their games till now.

But it was always going to be a tough game for Ange Postecoglou’s side. Not only are Bayer Leverkusen a brilliant team but they are in great form right now as well, currently sitting at second in the Bundesliga table.

One player who has been making a huge impact this season is Florian Wirtz. The 18-year-old attacking midfielder has been absolutely sensational. According to stats from Transfermarkt, he has scored 6 goals and provided 4 assists in 7 appearances across all competitions for Bayer Leverkusen this season. He has also already represented the Germany national team.

He found the back of the net against Celtic as well. And he appeared to have enjoyed the atmosphere at Parkhead. As reported by the Daily Record, Wirtz said:

"“At first, there was an incredible atmosphere in the stadium. You have to get used to it, but once I did, it was fun to play here.“Then when we managed to get into the game and score some goals, it became even more fun. I loved it because it was consistently loud.”"

Celtic need to improve as soon as possible

This was another good opportunity for this Celtic team to test themselves against one of the top sides in Europe. And performance-wise, they did not do too badly.

Postecoglou’s side could have easily scored more than once if they had taken their chances but a combination of brilliant goalkeeping and disappointing finishing meant that Celtic did not manage to find the back of the net on this occasion.

What will be a huge worry though is their work on the other end of the pitch. Whether it was individual mistakes or leaving things too open collectively, the Hoops do not look like a good defensive side at this point of time. They have not for a while now. And that is one area of their game that they need to improve a lot if they are to challenge for titles this season or in the future.
