There were certainly some concerns in midfield for Celtic, when the summer transfer window closed. Ryan Christie departed on deadline day and a replacement was not signed. And with the lack of options in the middle of the park, a lot seemed to rest on Callum McGregor’s shoulders. The captain has picked up an injury since then and we have seen the Hoops struggle in his absence.

It was not just Christie who left though. Scott Brown and Olivier Ntcham both sealed permanent exits as well while Scott Robertson and Luca Connell, both of whom could have served as cover, left on loan.

In terms of arrivals there, youngster Liam Shaw was joined by the much more experienced James McCarthy. Neither of them have quite managed to make their mark yet though. While Shaw is yet to make his competitive debut for the senior team, McCarthy has struggled for form and fitness.

Also, another problem has been the lack of different kinds of options in the middle of the park. For example, both David Turnbull and Tom Rogic have featured together a lot recently. They are quite similar kind of players though and one has to feel that Celtic could do with a different kind of midfielder in the squad.

Midfield appears to be the biggest problem for Celtic right now

Many have viewed defence as the club’s biggest weakness in recent times. But when everyone is fit, it might very well be midfield.

While Postecoglou has a number of options to pick his defensive backline from, the same cannot be said about Celtic’s midfield, where things appear to be very limited right now.

Hopefully, more additions will be made there in the future while McGregor’s return is expected to help a lot as well. At this point of time, one can only hope that more players do not end up picking up injuries over the coming weeks.
