A number of players have left Celtic over the years with dreams of returning one day. For some it has happened while for others it has not. That’s just how football is. And it looks like one former player had the possibility of making a comeback at one point of time, but does not feel like the chance is still there for it to happen one day.

Aiden McGeady came through the youth ranks at Celtic to establish himself as a first-team star at Parkhead. And he enjoyed a spectacular stint at the club before moving away in 2010.

He spent a few years with Spartak Moscow after departing Parkhead before joining Everton. Since then, he has played for several clubs down South and is currently with Sunderland, still going strong at the age of 35.

McGeady has revealed that at one point of time, he had talks about a potential return to Celtic but it didn’t happen then. While speaking with Press Box Podcast and as reported by the Daily Record, he said:

"“There was a possibility for me to rejoin Celtic actually.“It was when I was at Everton where I was in and out of the team and Ronny Deila was the manager.“John Kennedy actually phoned me and asked if I fancied going back, I can’t remember if it was on loan or permanent.“But I had only been an Everton less than a year and had it in the back of my head that I didn’t want to go back then as I thought I would play for Everton at some point.“After that, the opportunity never appeared again.”"

He also does not feel that it is something that will still happen although at one point of time, he did want to finish his career at Celtic:

"“I had it in my head when I was younger that I wanted to come back to Celtic one day and finishing my career there would’ve been the ideal scenario.“But it just didn’t happen and it won’t now as it’s not happened yet I don’t think.”"

McGeady returning to Celtic is very unlikely to happen

At one point of time, a McGeady return would have been a spectacular move for Celtic. But right now, that does not appear to be the case any longer.

McGeady is now 35 years of age. And while he still plays regular football for Sunderland, the one-time Premier League regulars are now in League One.

Several years back, McGeady coming back would have been fantastic, both on the pitch and off it. But right now, that time has most probably passed although one never knows in football. It is great to see that he is still doing well and playing regularly though.
