While Celtic might have tasted defeat at the hands of Real Betis away in Seville in the opening game of their Europa League campaign, there were quite a few positives to come out from the game with.

Yes, conceding four goals is never a positive and that is something that the Hoops need to work on. But the overall performance was not terrible. Also, one has to remember that they were missing several players.

Heading into the game, most fans probably would have taken a 4-3 defeat against Manuel Pellegrini’s side. But losing after taking a 2-0 lead inside the first 30 minutes is what was most disappointing about this game. Again, game management is another aspect that the Hoops will need to improve in.

Ange Postecoglou appeared to be looking at the positives coming out of the game though and seemed to be excited about the team’s future. As reported by The Herald, the Celtic manager said:

"“I was really proud of the football we played and the efforts the players put in. We showed some resilience to show that irrespective of circumstances, we will be a certain kind of football team.“Don’t get me wrong, I’m disappointed we didn’t win tonight, and I’m disappointed the players didn’t get their rewards, but it doesn’t deter my bullishness about where we’re heading.“We’re just going to get stronger, there’s no doubt about that.”"

Postecoglou makes exciting claim about Celtic future

It is safe to say that Celtic have made a lot of progress over the past couple of seasons. While the results have been mixed till now, the performances have provided a lot to be excited about.

Now though, it is about building upon these performances and start delivering consistent results. The club have lost 3 of their last 4 games and overall, they have won 7, lost 5 and drawn 1 of their 13 competitive games under the management of Postecoglou.

Thus, there is no doubt that there are several areas that this team needs to improve upon before they can be considered as a team that can compete for trophies. But if they can continue to progress at the rate that they have since the start of the campaign, then there is no reason that they cannot challenge the Rangers for the Premiership title this season itself.
