Jose Mourinho’s departure from Tottenham Hotspur saw him being added to the growing list of potential next Celtic managers. But his time with the Spurs shows why he might not be the right option for the Hoops.

A report from The Athletic (via Football 365) has provided an interesting insight into what brought the end for Mourinho at Tottenham.

Let’s put aside the other factors to make his appointment unlikely – his massive salary, the Scottish league and a limited player budget. Let’s look past those and focus on what he would bring to the table right now.

In the report, there is mention of Mourinho’s tactics with so much focus on stopping the opposition that the players were unsure how to attack themselves. At Parkhead, better defensive structure and organisation at the back is needed but any new manager would be expected to produce attacking football as well.

Mourinho not the right man for the Celtic job

Mourinho has been linked with the Parkhead job ever since his departure from Tottenham Hotspur and it is understandable as he has definitely been a top coach for decades and brought incredible success to many clubs.

Celtic fans would know him well from the past as it was his FC Porto side who beat the Hoops in the famous 2003 UEFA Cup final in Seville.

For many, he would be a dream manager. And to be honest, his record speaks for itself. He is without doubt one of the most successful managers of his generation.

But in recent years, he has not looked like the man who guided teams like FC Porto and Inter Milan to Champions League titles. His spell at Manchester United brought them trophies but was underwhelming. And Tottenham Hotspur is the first club he left without a trophy since his early days in management in Portugal.

At this stage of his career, do we think he would be the right man for the Celtic job? No way Jose!
