Perhaps the most forward-looking option of the three would be 23-year-old English winger Patrick Roberts from Manchester City. Having been with Manchester City since 2015, Roberts has never broken into the first team, being loaned out for every season since 2016, including a productive two-and-a-half year stint at Parkhead.

During his spell in Glasgow, he even rejected a chance to appear for England’s U19 side in their U19 European Championship pursuit in order to help Celtic in their Champions League campaign, scoring against his parent club in the Champions League just a few months later, as well as taking the Scottish Premiership’s Player of the Month award in April 2016.

Roberts made 78 appearances for Celtic, scoring 18 goals and providing 26 assists. His career has somewhat fallen flat since that spell however, making 21 appearances with no goals to his name for Spanish club Girona the year after, followed by a stint at Norwich City where he again failed to find the back of the net.

His spell at Middlesbrough also looks on the verge of coming to a premature end after he has failed to break into Neil Warnock’s first-team plans. With Manchester City likely to send him out on another loan spell if that happens, the potential is there for him to return to Celtic where he could pursue a career turnaround and likely see some solid playing time for a side that is short on wingers.
