Celtic fans have called for the club to make a move for the rival defender in January after their struggles at the back this season.

Celtic’s issues at the back have been well documented this season. After questioning Christopher Jullien and Kristoffer Ajer’s ability to deal with physical strikers over the past year or so, Shane Duffy was brought in to solidify things and add some much needed grit to the backline. Unfortunately, it appears that the Republic of Ireland international has had the opposite effect.

While he started out well with two goals in his first two games, things have quickly gone downhill for Duffy. So much so that he looks like a mistake waiting to happen these days and might have already lost his place in the starting XI, something that you would not expect for a player who the club are rumoured to be paying £40,000 a week.

And with both Ajer and Jullien struggling with injury issues, it might be a good idea to bring in another centre-back in January. In the eyes of some fans, that man needs to be Declan Gallagher after his display against Serbia.

Gallagher has played just six times for the Scottish national team but they have won all of those games. And the 6′ 6″ centre-back looked like a commanding figure last night.

But at 29 years of age, one has to question whether he is good enough for the club or if the fans are just overreacting on the basis of one game as they are desperate for a centre-back right now.

The Motherwell captain came through the Celtic youth ranks but was let go before ever making a competitive appearance for the Hoops. Since then, he has played for several clubs in Scotland but has never quite hit the big time.

Now, if Celtic tried they could probably get Gallagher in January. But they need to make sure first whether he is someone who is a diamond in the rough or just an object that is shiner brighter because of how dull things have been at Parkhead lately.
