It was a very mixed game against AC Milan, disappointing to lose by letting three goals in. But Celtic had plenty of encouragement and lessons to take into the Aberdeen match on Sunday.

After the loss in the Glasgow derby there’s been much concern amongst the Celtic following. That’s been focussed on the players, the manager, the tactics, the board and almost everything else. Some of the comments have been sharp and pointed but accurate. Others have been wild, not thought through or just plain ridiculous. It’s been hard to sort out the real issues from all the noise, hurt and anger.

Coming out of the Milan match, despite losing 1-3, there are perhaps more promising signs of improvement, of potential returns to form and some fans have been recognising that. It’s not good to lose, but if Celtic can take some lessons and apply them going forward it could have been a useful learning experience.

There were three main learning points in amongst a lot of question marks and positive signs.

Diego Laxalt is definitely a top player

He was already keenly looking forward to playing against his home club having joined Celtic on loan from AC Milan. He said the connection would not change the way he played. That looked very much the case.

From the off Laxalt was on the ball, making great runs on and off the ball and showing grit and determination. He looked strong and in control which perhaps highlighted the difference over Greg Taylor’s perhaps more measured and arguably timid approach. He showed he could get past players going wide, at times he cut inside very usefully and he got a couple of shots away. During the second half he linked up well with Elyounoussi, a potentially useful combination.

His performance and attitude against Milan has certainly got many Celtic fans and observers on his side.

It’s still early days and as seems often to be the case with Celtic players arriving, Laxalt is not yet up to full fitness. He hasn’t played many games this season and this was only his second in the Hoops, both difficult games of course. That’s likely why he was replaced by Greg Taylor late in the game.

Laxalt will need time to settle, but that should only make him better. He’s off to a flying start so far and should do well against Aberdeen at the weekend.
