A major detail has emerged about Shane Duffy’s Celtic contract with the defender currently on a season-long loan from Brighton and Hove Albion.

The sad reality of modern football is that a club the size of Celtic cannot compete financially with much smaller clubs who play in lucrative leagues around Europe. Most professional footballers as a result find it more enticing to play for a relegation-fighting in the Premier League instead of donning the famous Hoops.

Shane Duffy is not one of those footballers though. By the looks of things, he could have easily opted to remain in the Premier League if he had wanted to as there were no lack of suitors when it emerged that Brighton and Hove Albion were willing to let him leave the club on loan after losing his place in the first-team.

The Republic of Ireland international decided to move to Parkhead instead in order to be a part of the 10IAR campaign. Growing up as a Celtic supporter himself, Duffy will know what that means to the fans.

The defender is only on a loan for the time being though and some fans of his club do not appear to be happy. One of them put a tweet out claiming about how Brighton and Hove Albion are paying him £25,000 per week even when he is playing for the Hoops. That is to be expected though as Scottish clubs cannot pay Premier League money or so we had thought!

Duffy himself took to Twitter to confirm that Celtic pay his full wages:

This is a massive revelation and a huge show of ambition of the part of Celtic. Duffy is reported to have a salary of around £40,000 per week. If the Hoops are paying him that then he is most probably the highest paid player in the current squad.

This is fantastic news though as it shows that Peter Lawwell and company are taking this season seriously. Celtic have the opportunity to lift a historical 10IAR and should go as far as possible to make sure that they put the strongest team possible on the pitch.

Duffy’s addition has certainly made this team stronger and sorted out a lot of the club’s issues at the back, resulting in four clean sheets on the trot. And if he is getting big money for that kind of impact, then he deserves it.
