The transfer window might have just shut but Celtic fans are already calling for the club to make a move for Jack Wilshere.
Once upon a time, Jack Wilshere was considered the brightest prospect in all of England and the great hope of their national team’s torturous search for silverware. Those days are long gone though and it is unlikely that the midfielder will ever turn out for his country on the international stage. The hype around him is well and truly finished.
For most players, this is because of a lack of talent. For Wilshere though, the talent was never in question. He won the PFA Young Player of the Year Award. He won the Arsenal Player of the Season Award and made it into PFA Team of the Year through the course of his career. Instead, it were the constant injuries that cost him.
At the end of the day, he is still just 28 years of age. And is there still a player somewhere in there though? Some Celtic fans certainly believe so and have called for the club to sign him for free after his contract was terminated by West Ham United.
Wilshere was on an astronomical £100,000 per week at the London club though and would have to take a huge pay cut if he wants to kick a ball in a Celtic shirt. But for a player who has missed so much of his career due to injuries, it might actually be a tempting move. But does the move make sense for Celtic?
It does but only if the price is right. At the end of the day, Celtic do not need Jack Wilshere right now. But he needs a club like the Hoops to re-establish his career. So while there is no immediate need for the Englishman at Parkhead, we should not rule out the possibility either without knowing all the variables involved in any deal.
