Celtic are reportedly set to submit one final bid for their top transfer target who they have been chasing for quite a while.

Celtic have already done some impressive business in the transfer window this summer. But there is probably still one piece missing in the puzzle in the form of a left-back.

Currently, Greg Taylor is the starting left-back at Celtic but he has not been entirely convincing in the chances that he has had since last season. Many fans believe that he is the weak link in this team and there is good reason for that. And with both Jonny Hayes and Boli Bolingoli having left, the Hoops must go out and secure the services of another left-back before the transfer window slams shut in less than two weeks.

The man that they seem to be most closely following at the moment is Charlton Athletic’s Alfie Doughty. And having failed with two bids already, they are expected to put in one final bid for the 20-year-old as reported by the Daily Record.

A left-midfielder, Doughty is also capable of playing at left-back and might even be made for the left-wingback role in Neil Lennon’s 3-5-2 formation. And he would be expected to challenge Greg Taylor for the first-team spot if he does not end up making the move.

Charlton Athletic are holding out for £1 million and Celtic are not expected to pay that amount. And with less than a year left on Doughty’s contract, they could even get him for free next season if they really want him. Until then, the club could look towards a short-term fix for the season with Leeds left-back Barry Douglas also having been linked for quite some time.

If Neil Lennon really wants the English youngster, the club should really not let the move fall through. We have done that before with John McGinn and seen the player’s value multiply ten times in the span of a couple of years.
