A previously reported Celtic loan target has just inked a contract extension, with an alleged £55 million release clause.

Having already signed three players on permanent deals, it is likely that Celtic will look to take the loan route now for further signings. 20-year-old Spanish starlet winger Rodrigo Riquelme was a noted transfer target for Neil Lennon’s side in previous months, but has reportedly inked a new deal with his side, as his original contract was set to run out next year.

With this new contract including a release clause reportedly around £55 million, it’s incredibly unlikely the Hoops sign him on a permanent deal, but Atletico could be open to a loan deal to help the young player get some development in.

Celtic have long been known for developing young stars who went on to achieve big things elsewhere, and could potentially help develop the young winger who has just one senior appearance for his side thus far.

While playing for Atletico’s B-side squad, Riquelme netted five times in 22 matches and has shown flashes of his potential talent. A loan to Glasgow could get him the playing time he needs to help further his abilities, potentially getting some first-team play behind Elyounoussi and Forrest.

Riquelme has drawn comparisons thus far in play-style and talent to former Atletico star Antoine Griezmann, capable of playing on the wings or centrally behind the striker, meaning he could plug in Lennon’s system feasibly well as a substitute or rotation player.

With a little over 2 weeks left on the transfer window, if a move is to be made for the star prospect, Lennon and company would have to swoop soon. Having found success already recently with a loan star in Edouard before making that move permanent, a loan move for Riquelme would be welcome news for Celtic fans.
