In a roller coaster start to the season for Celtic, the team and fans have been through both turmoil and triumph. Social media has been alight with very diverse views. Isn’t it great then to see some real visible and vocal support at the weekend for the team from the fans.

The ups and downs of the season continue. After the awful defeat in the Champions League qualifier match on Wednesday, it was great to take a step back towards business as usual with a home win against Motherwell. The return back to a forward up front formation in the second half and a few other tactical changes and substitutions made all the difference for Celtic.

Back towards business as usual overlooks the very different atmosphere in the stadium during matches. Normally Celtic draw great benefit from the tremendous fans. It can urge a team on at difficult times. And sure, when everyone has an ‘Oh no’ moment or howls with despair at a missed pass, it can also be unnerving. No doubt though that the players would rather have that backing than not. It’ll be very interesting to see how test games with some fans progress.

Had it been a full crowd at the weekend there may have been some apprehension from players before the game given the midweek qualifying loss. For Sunday’s match against Motherwell the players probably had a range of social media comments ringing in their heads, not much would have been complimentary. Plus of course anything Neil Lennon had said, that may have motivated them in it’s more temperate moments in the days after the game. Or it may have niggled a few with the pointed wanting to leave remarks.

Some Celtic fans have continued their support for the team in a great way, with a certain flare and style.  A group of supporters lined the approach to the stadium before Sunday’s home game and both noisily and visually cheered the arrival of the team bus. The players must have seen and been pleased to see the support for them.  A banner reminded the players of the season’s importance declaring “Earn your place in history”.

This underlines the enormous value Celtic fans bring and backs the faithful through and through principle. Other clubs may have had sack the board banners, It’s great to see Celtic fans playing their part despite the behind closed doors football.
