Premier League side are interested in signing Celtic star
Rumours are doing the rounds that the Premier League side are pursuing a transfer deal for the Celtic star.
Previously reported via Saints Marching as well as the Scottish Sun, it seems the Premier League club are in the hunt to sign the Celtic defender as a potential rotation piece behind their current center-halves. Of course, it will help them get a deal done since Kristoffer Ajer already seems to want a move away.
Having been with Celtic since 2016, the 22-year-old Norwegian defender has been a staple for the Hoops the past two seasons, making 28 appearances in each of those seasons with over 130 total for the club.
Ajer has come into his own with Celtic in recent seasons, capable of playing as a defensive midfielder as well as in the center back position. With excellent skill controlling the ball and in the passing game, he has consistently progressed in terms of defensive skill as well.
Purchased for just over £500K in 2016, it’s likely that his sale could net quite a cash haul for the club, which reportedly could fetch as high as £20 million.
He has not been in the best of form in recent months, as it looks like he is actively pursuing a high profile move away from Celtic. Southampton are just the latest club rumoured to be of interest, joining West Ham, West Bromwich, and AC Milan.
With the English club having already signed a defender in Mohammed Salisu from Valladolid for a fee of around £10 million, pursuing Ajer would seem to signal the potential offloading of Jannik Vestergaard, who has yet to truly find his worth in the club.
Celtic have had a fairly successful history of transfers with the club, including the likes of Virgil Van Djik, Fraser Forster, Stuart Armstrong, Victor Wanyama in recent years, not to mention Mo Eyounoussi currently loaned into the club. This also comes just after Hoops midfielder Oliver Ntcham was also rumored to be a subject of Southampton’s transfer interest.
Luckily, if Ajer were to depart, Celtic should have quite the cash on hand to be able to find a solid replacement.
