In a troubled week it’s probably not helpful to have Kris Commons earning his living by adding to the Celtic dirty washing being done in public.
Kris Commons was a great player for Celtic, but his priority now seems to be saying things that are controversial enough to get paid for by the ever news hungry Scottish media.
Commons didn’t have to look far this week for Celtic news or views to stir the pot. The backlash from the Ferencvaros defeat provides plenty of points, Commons didn’t find any new ones though. His main points from him in the Daily Record being:
- Neil Lennon should be worried about his squads depth and lack of quality.
- The Hoops are over reliant on Odsonne Edouard.
- Patryk Klimala should be beating down Lennon’s door.
Cutting edge analysis and punditry there Kris. Of course Lennon has concerns about his squad, he’s just shockingly seen his team crash out of the Champions League when he wasn’t able to play his leading striker. Which of course underlines the reliance on Edouard.
For Klimala, no doubt he’s already heard or knows the explanation of why he didn’t play or wasn’t considered fit enough. But it’s better news that he hasn’t run to the media to grab a few bob, or thrashed around sulkily in the subs area to show his displeasure. Unlike some!
Commons also takes a swipe at Nick Hammonds recruitment policy:
"“I just don’t think they’ve spent their money as wisely as when John Park was there.”“Aside from Edouard, who’s come through the door recently who’s made a big impact? Christopher Jullien at £7m? I’m not convinced. Boli Bolingoli? Not good enough. Vasilis Barkas? I’ll need to see a bit more. Greg Taylor? I don’t think he’s European standard. Hatem Abd Elhamed — no. And Jeremie Frimpong is a kid.”"
A bit harsh in places although Bolingoli and Taylor are relatively easy and common to others as disappointments. Early days for Barkas who hasn’t done much wrong in his short spell so far. Frimpong deserves far more praise than being dismissed as a kid. Elhamed made a critical error but has looked good previously and Jullien on the whole has been sound, other than occasionally up against a big fella on a carpet.
Celtic and Lennon have plenty to worry about and to settle, signing David Turnbull and hopefully Shane Duffy to come alongside Albian Ajeti should help with quality. The club won’t be worried or distracted by Commons ramblings.
While we are talking quality though Kris…
Your article in the Record is a bit tame, offering nothing new, no insightful thoughts or information. Is that good enough quality for the media? Is it up to the past standards of excellent reporting? That’s maybe where your focus should be on doing things better if you want to earn a living from it.
